New York Credit Optimization

Overview

New York utilizes a unique concept to apply CPE credits called credit optimization.   Unless the licensee chooses a specific CPE path to compliance by adding a flag in their New York profile the credits by field of study will default to optimize credits if the most efficient path to obtain CPE compliance.  LCvista has built this concept in to our CPE mapping.  For more information about the state’s subject area requirements, see the NYSED description of mandatory CPE subject areas.

Credit optimization works in one of two ways:

1. A specialization flag is selected

When a specialization flag is checked on the user’s New York jurisdiction profile, only programs that fulfill that specialization will apply toward the requirement. For example, if the Assurance flag is selected, this means only programs with an Auditing or Auditing (Governmental) field of study will count.

It is expected behavior for programs without an Auditing or Auditing (Governmental) field of study not to apply when a specialization flag is checked.

2. No specialization flag is selected

When no flag is selected, the system automatically chooses a specialization based on the majority of programs the user has completed, and optimizes credits accordingly.

Verifying a User’s Specialization Flags

  1. Open the user’s profile.
  2. Go to the user’s jurisdiction profile for New York and review to see if the user has a flag selected for their New York reporting periods
  3. Review the specialization flags to see which are checked.

Removing a Specialization Flag

As with all flags in the system, If a user doesn’t need to track a specialization, you can uncheck the flag for any compliance period in which they don’t want to track it. Once the flag is removed, the system will optimize the user’s credits based on their program completions related to the available specialties in New York.

Important Notes

  • New York Specific Ethics will always count toward the user’s requirements, regardless of specialization flag settings. You can confirm this on the user’s compliance period transcript.
  • Flag changes carry forward automatically to new compliance reporting periods. If a user no longer needs a specialization in New York, remove the flag starting with the first period where it’s no longer needed, and that change will carry forward to future periods.
