Rolling vs. Fixed Reporting Periods

In LCvista, a jurisdiction's reporting periods are either rolling or fixed.

Rolling reporting periods overlap. As a rolling period advances, the oldest year drops off and a new year is added, causing each new reporting period to share some years with the previous one.

Fixed reporting periods do not overlap. Instead, a new reporting period begins only after the previous reporting period ends.

Examples

Overlap is what separates the two methods.

Jurisdiction Type Period 1 Period 2 Period 3
Rolling 1/1/24 - 12/31/26 1/1/25 - 12/31/27 1/1/26 - 12/31/28
Fixed 1/1/24 - 12/31/26 1/1/27 - 12/31/29 1/1/30 - 12/31/32

How to tell which method a jurisdiction uses

Look at a user's reporting periods and check whether they overlap. Do not rely on end dates alone, because a fixed period also ends every year when it is a 12-month requirement.

  • Rolling: reporting periods overlap and a period ends every year.
  • Fixed: reporting periods do not overlap.

Proration

Proration is the concept that newly licensed individuals are not subject to the full CPE requirements.  For more information on proration, click here.

Credit Adjustments

Overlapping periods change how adjustments behave. In a rolling jurisdiction, a user has several reporting periods that cover the same years, so annual period adjustments will appear across several reporting periods.
